EDI In The Arts

Our virtual training programmes designed specifically for Arts organisations.

"The arts are transformative and a powerhouse for change. It is essential we create a representative and inclusive environment for all to ensure we have a thriving arts industry for the future.”

Shonagh Reid, Director

We know that you are keen to ensure your industry is representative of the world we live in and our local communities. You may have a plan in place, you may have funding, you may have goals for this year which are directly linked to EDI.

How can you embed change, tackle the difficult issues with a small budget and capacity problems?

Our EDI in the Arts programme will help you.

Two ways to participate…

  • You get all of the same content, but delivered over two consecutive working days.

This means you can harness your learning more quickly.

  • Sessions are delivered live, so you will also get to benefit from building relationships with other participants

  • Access the learning on your own terms.

You will have access to a portal with all of the reading, resources and videos in one place.

  • You will be able to learn at your own pace and in any order.

What do people say about this programme?

  • The EDI in the Arts programme was in depth, thought provoking, challenging, accessible, practical and implementable. It should be compulsory to all humans! I cant recommend this programme enough, as an arts organisation but also across all areas of working and personal life.

Lauren King - Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

  • The sessions have been incredibly useful and although we are making great progress within work around EDI we are aware through the sessions what areas we can focus on.

    Matt Chesney - BACKLIT Gallery

  • The programme has been so helpful for us. The resources were excellent as was the delivery.

    Rachel - RSC

What will we cover?

There are 11 different topics we will cover which are relevant to the arts industry.

Here is just a taster of the meaningful and varied content we will cover.

  • What are the real factors we need to consider? What are the social and historical barriers to participation in the arts and how do we overcome them?

  • What is psychological safety? Why is it particularly important for us to understand it in the arts, and when we are embarking on an EDI journey?

  • The rehearsal space is a place where emotions can run high and people can feel very vulnerable. How do we ensure our values and EDI commitments are as consistent in the rehearsal room as they are elsewhere in our organisations?

  • How class and socioeconomic background can intersect with other identities to create super barriers. Class as a glass ceiling.

  • One reason people give for a lack of diversity on stage, in creative teams and in Back of House positions, is a lack of pool to draw from. We challenge that and offer guidance on how you can find, access, and create diverse talent in and for your organisation.

  • We identify the hot spots where discrimination and bias thrive in the arts and consider how we eliminate these.

  • How do we ensure that our freelancers get the same experience as our permanent staff? How do we also ensure that our freelancers are upholding our values? How do we look after our touring teams? We will explore all of this together.

  • ‘We want to recruit diversely but can’t find anyone, and when we do recruit ‘them’ they don’t stay’.

We will explore how we actually recruit inclusively and do a better job of retaining staff.

  • We recommend a top down/bottom-up approach to inclusion.

How do we engage the people we work with and use their skills and passions effectively, without demoralising and exploiting them? How do we ensure your board understands their role in your EDI strategy?

  • Inclusion work can get tough. We explore the reasons why in this session and provide practical strategies for getting your progress moving again.
